People & Communities

Engagement with the people and communities near the manufacturers business locations is a key part of the interactions that are made, both with the importance of the employment of local people in the businesses, and within the supply chains and partners of them, together with the development of strong relationships to the community and its leaders not directly involved with the lime industry. Communication is key and the MPA Lime members put significant efforts into creating opportunities for dialogue and interaction, not only in addressing concerns, also in keeping everyone informed of the developments of the business.

In 2025, Lhoist UK opened a 'Garden beside the Plant' at their Hindlow plant in land adjacent to the car park of a neighbouring Bookshop and Cafe business. Gardens have multi-level benefits for health (digging), welfare (being with nature), environment (helping nature) and community (open to all), so it is great to see this initiative coming from the seed of an idea, expecting it to grow and for those who get involved to reap the benefits. The Mayor of High Peak, Councillor Dom Elliott-Starkey and his Consort, County Councillor Jean Wharmby, were there to cut the ribbon and there was also the opportunity to make seed bombs to help get the garden growing with bee-friendly wildflowers.
